I have taken on the January Challenge for the Vintage Socks KAL and decided to knit the Fancy Silk Socks. In accordance with the rules I waited until January 1st to start them. I got ready last night by winding my skein of yarn but I didn't cast on single stitch until this morning.
I'm using Lorna's Laces in the Grapevine colorway. As always, I love the softness of Lorna's and the stitch definition is great also. I had to start the cuff of double pointed needles because one stitch needed to be moved every other round and that's so much easier to do with dps. After the cuff was finished, however, I was only too happy to get the sock onto my usual circulars (Knit Picks this time).

I told Penny that I'd post a picture of what I bought at my LYS store yesterday. This store doesn't carry much in the way of sock yarn that interests me but I did pick up a skein of Mountain Colors Bearfoot in a beautiful, fallish colorway called Gold Rush. I think it will sit in the stash for a bit but I'm anxious to knit it up. I want to find the perfect pattern for it. As you can see, I also bought myself a ball winder. Woohoo!! Only problem is that my dear husband makes a lousy swift and I do believe I will have to buy myself a swift also. I thought I could make do with just the ball winder but last night's winding session left a lot to be desired.

It's a rainy, icy day here in New Hampshire. Perfect knitting weather.
Happy New Year!!
Ooooh! I like the yarns! I sort of wish I was doing that KAL too. I might put my lace socks on the back burner to do this sock too. I asked to join the vintage sock KAL but haven't heard back yet.
ReplyDeleteThink I'll get my book out and see what yarn I have already spun up.
I like the Bearfoot yarn too! Pretty! I have so many in the gold/brown range. I had to stop buying them.
My brother made me a yarn swift...did you see it on my blog? It may be on my "other blog". Not sure if I moved those pix over to the knitting one. Check the sidebar for the link.
Looks Great! Love the shade.
ReplyDeleteOh and no thats unusal for CTH to have those knots, I'd call them......
You are further along than me!!! I have my balls wound, but then other things got in the way...I hope to start my socks tonight! Those Fancy Silk socks are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI went for a year with a ball winder and no swift....I got this one at Joanne.com with a 50% off coupon.
My father is supposed to be making me a swift. I hope it comes out alright. My husband is relegated to the fact that I will be buying a ball winder. For now either he or my lampshade acts as a swift.
ReplyDeleteMy LYS doesn't carry many sock yarns that I like either. Though I wish it did, I love to knit socks more than almost anything.
I got a wool winder for Christmas. I think I will be getting the swift really soon as well. My kitchen chairs don't allow the yarn to "wind off" without getting caught on the back. I tried my husband for the swift as well. Problem is he is a truck driver and is gone a lot.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Should have read this post before asking about circular needles!
ReplyDeleteI have a ball winder and swift on order...should be delivered early next week. My ankles are very happy they won't be holding any more yarn...the boys are happy too!
I'm so jealous - I dropped what I thought were loads of hints about a wool winder but Santa is getting very unreliable these days.....still only 3 months till my birthday so I'm hoping!
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks for commenting on my blog! I think we have a lot in common other than returning to knitting at the same time--we both love baseball (although your Bosox caused broken hearts all over St. Louis in 2004).
ReplyDeleteThat purple Lorna's Laces is gorgeous! Sheri (of the Loopy Ewe), whom I visited yesterday, said she had ordered some solid colors from them, though the arrival date is up in the air.
I have to use a big chair for my "swift." Oh, those husbands/boyfriends/whoever who won't hold still long enough for us to wind up 400 yards of yarn...
